Nutrition Workshop

Diabetes care is a multifactorial everyday process, from managing glucose levels and avoiding any fluctuations to accurately counting meal carbohydrates for Insulin dosing. Maintaining a coherent healthy lifestyle for diabetics requires good knowledge of nutrition and recognizing how eating behavior can influence managing diabetes. Understanding and applying these concepts by physicians will be the objective of our workshop offered to the “Rising Stars” physicians, which focuses thoroughly on nutritional management with diabetes.

Intended Learning Outcomes By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to: 

  • Identify the general guidelines for assessing growth and nutritional status  among children and adolescents with diabetes.
  • Identify children requiring further nutritional interventions.
  • Detailed understanding of proper meal planning for children with type 1 diabetes.
  • Implementing an individualized nutritional plan for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
  • Carbohydrate assessment and methods of carb counting.
  • Understand the impact of different macronutrients on postprandial glucose excursion.
  • Fine tune prandial insulin dosage to optimize postprandial glucose excursion, with special emphasis on different insulin delivery (splits and types of boluses).
  • Testing meal-time insulin dosage and delivery regimen.
  • Address nutritional management during exercise and physical activity.
  • Identify the importance of diet education and lifestyle modification among children and young people with type 2 diabetes. Treatment outlines for adolescents with type 2 diabetes.
  • Diagnosis of obesity, identifying treatments options for children and adolescents.
  • Identify the difference between disordered eating and eating disorders.
